🇲🇽 The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed on Feb. 2, 1848, ending the U.S. Mexico War and extending the boundaries of the United States west to the Pacific Ocean.

The war was an invasion and occupation and of Mexico by the U.S. in fact, the official name for the U.S. Army was the Army of Occupation. (The Mexican territory occupied by the United States was originally Native land that was conquered by Spain, and continued by Mexico following independence.)

Bill Bigelow wrote in the introduction to the lesson, 'U.S. Mexico War: "We Take Nothing by Conquest, Thank God" and a critique of U.S. history textbooks' coverage of the U.S. Mexico War:

"Grasping some of the motives for that war and some of its immediate effects begins to provide students the kind of historical context that is crucial for thinking intelligently about the border that separates the United States and Mexico. It also gives students insights into the justifications for and costs of war today.

Most Mexicans know that the war against Mexico was another chapter in U.S. imperialism a "North American invasion," as it's commemorated in a huge memorial in Mexico City's Chapultepec Park."

Here's what Col. Ethan Allan Hitchcock, aide to the commander of U.S. forces Gen. Zachary Taylor, wrote at the time in his journal about the war's origins: "I have said from the first that the United States are the aggressors... We have not one particle of right to be here... It looks as if the government sent a small force on purpose to bring on a war, so as to have a pretext for taking California and as much of this country as it chooses."

.. It was a war of the American elite against the Mexican elite, each side exhorting, using, killing its own population as well as the other. The Mexican commander Santa Anna had crushed rebellion after rebellion, his troops also raping and plundering after victory"

#OnThisDay in 1944, the philosopher, Marxist politician, antiracist and feminist African-American activist Angela Davis was born. Her commitment to social justice led her to confront racial discrimination and denounce systemic oppression in her country. Through her activism and dedication, she continues to inspire generations in the fight for a fairer world.

“Leftist organizations have argued within a Marxist and orthodox vision that class is the most important thing. Of course, class is important. It is necessary to understand that class informs race. But race also informs class. And gender informs class. Race is the way class is lived. In the same way, gender is the way race is lived. We need to reflect deeply to perceive the intersections between race, class, and gender, to realize that there are mutual and cross-cutting relationships between these categories. No one can assume the primacy of one category over the others,” she wrote.

Tras el estreno de un largometraje documental de @aquiestamos.do y un cortometraje documental "Obsesión: Mi canción" de @maestra_productions del #Caribe, y reflexionar sobre la justicia de sanación, dimos inicio a un nuevo capítulo lleno de #historias que buscan #sanar y #transformar.

Sinopsis: El dúo de hip hop Obsesión fue uno de los primeros grupos del floreciente movimiento de hip hop habanero de la década de 1990, parte de una nueva generación de jóvenes afrocubanos que usaban el hip hop como plataforma para hablar sobre una amplia gama de cuestiones raciales y de justicia social, y para promover el orgullo y la conciencia negros. Obsesión se ha diversificado en la educación popular y el activismo comunitario y ha seguido adelante hasta hoy. Este breve documental explora su trabajo creativo y su filosofía de vida y música.

The hip hop duo Obsesión was one of the first groups of the burgeoning Havana hip hop movement of the 1990s, part of a new generation of young Afro-Cubans using hip hop as a platform to address a wide range of racial and social justice issues, and to promote Black pride and awareness. Obsesión has expanded into popular education and community activism, and they continue to thrive to this day. This short documentary explores their creative work, philosophy, and approach to life and music.
