On Joy Harjo’s birthday, we’re celebrating her On Joy Harjo’s birthday, we’re celebrating her words with Remember—a beautiful poem turned into a children’s book, brought to life with stunning illustrations by artist Michaela Goade.

Remember the sky that you were born under,
know each of the star’s stories.
Remember the moon, know who she is.
Remember the sun’s birth at dawn, that is the
strongest point of time. Remember sundown
and the giving away to night.
Remember your birth, how your mother struggled
to give you form and breath. You are evidence of
her life, and her mother’s, and hers.
Remember your father. He is your life, also.
Remember the earth whose skin you are:
red earth, black earth, yellow earth, white earth
brown earth, we are earth.
Remember the plants, trees, animal life who all have their
tribes, their families, their histories, too. Talk to them,
listen to them. They are alive poems.
Remember the wind. Remember her voice. She knows the
origin of this universe.
Remember you are all people and all people
are you.
Remember you are this universe and this
universe is you.
Remember all is in motion, is growing, is you.
Remember language comes from this.
Remember the dance language is, that life is.
Remember.

This week’s recommendation is in honor of Septima Clark's birthday (May 3, 1898).

Septima Clark played one of the most essential, but little recognized roles in the Civil Rights Movement. Born in 1898 in Charleston, South Carolina, she was a public school teacher until 1956, when she was dismissed for refusing to disavow her membership in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Soon after, she was hired by the Highlander Folk School, helping to design and implement Citizenship Schools throughout the South where Black adults could learn to read, register to vote and build individual and collective political power. During the 1960s she worked with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and was a close collaborator of Martin Luther King, Jr. From 1978 to 1983 she served as the first Black woman on the Charleston School Board. Her story is a major thread in the tapestry of the Civil Rights Movement.

Art by @mamamuralista A poem by Veera Sulaiman @ Art by @mamamuralista

A poem by Veera Sulaiman @adimagazine

"You learn to make your gods as small as a coffee cup and hide your future in it

The key to the land of the dead is inside a seed
we will return there each year

write your prayers in a new language and bend it to your will
keep it inside a filigreed silver box around your neck

A blue bead
a blue thread
to embroider the flag of an invisible indivisible nation onto your dress

You learn to sing in a secret language
for the prisoner’s ear only

In the end, what is left of every empire?
A few coins, a few iron nails rusting in the bottom of the river,
half remembered monuments and names

But our shadows are still striding the hills at dusk and the wind moves through our olive trees"
