Today is the birthday of our dear friend Nancy Mor

Today is the birthday of our dear friend Nancy Morejón. She is a poet, essayist, journalist, translator, and literary and theater critic. An essential writer in contemporary Cuban literature, she has gained immense prestige through her study of Nicolás Guillén's work and Caribbean literatures. She has been a full member of the Cuban Academy of Language since 1999. She served as an advisor at Casa de las Américas and was the President of the Association of Writers of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC). She has received numerous important accolades, including the Officer’s Insignia of the Order of Merit of the French Republic, the Replica of Máximo Gómez's Machete, and the Maestro de Juventudes distinction awarded by the Hermanos Saíz Association.

Hoy está de cumpleaños nuestra querida amiga Nancy Morejón. Poeta, ensayista, periodista, traductora, crítica literaria y teatral. Escritora imprescindible en la literatura contemporánea de Cuba. Ha alcanzado un inestimable prestigio consagrándose al estudio de la obra de Nicolás Guillén y de las literaturas del Caribe. Es miembro de número de la Academia Cubana de la Lengua (1999). Fue asesora de Casa de las Américas y Presidenta de la Asociación de Escritores de la Unión de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba (UNEAC). 🟢 In today’s episode we talk to Civil Rights activist Dave Dennis. He served as co-director of the Council of Federated Organizations (COFO), as director of Mississippi’s Congress of Racial Equality and was an important organizer of the Mississippi Freedom Summer of 1964.
Currently, Dennis works for the Algebra Project, an NGO that improves mathematics education for minority children.

On the occasion of the International Day of Afro-L

On the occasion of the International Day of Afro-Latin American, Afro-Caribbean, and Diaspora Women, celebrated today, July 25, the Cuban Afrofeminist Articulation, in its III Jornada, recognizes and honors the lives and legacies of two great women: Dr. Leyda Oquendo and journalist Gladys Egües.

Dr. Leyda Oquendo is considered one of the pioneers of Afrofeminism in Cuba. She was the first woman in Cuba to achieve the rank of Doctor in Historical Sciences, with a thesis on Africa. From then on, she dedicated herself to systematizing the various forms of resistance deployed by these men and women in the region.

Journalist Gladys Egües graduated in Journalism from the University of Havana in 1971. She is a researcher, writer, antiracist activist, and gender issues expert. A distinguished figure in Cuban journalism, she addressed the Amateur Artists and Art Instructors Movement in Matanzas and ventured into other cultural fronts. She participated in the establishment of the First National Brigade Raúl Gómez García and in the strengthening of UNEAC. She has collaborated in multiple programs on Cuban radio and television, focusing on Cuban women.

On this occasion, we share with you a short audiovisual about journalist Gladys Egües, edited by Gretel Marin and titled "Gladys Egües Cantero: Homenaje."

From July 19 to 31, 2024, the III CUBAN JOURNEY FOR THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF AFROLATIN AMERICAN, AFROCARIBBEAN, AND DIASPORA WOMEN will take place. This edition is dedicated to Dr. Leyda Oquendo Barrios and Journalist Gladys Egües Cantero.

In their honor, a tribute event will be held with the aim of celebrating, recognizing, and getting closer to the life and work of these two women and their contributions to the emancipation of Black women.

Participants will include the group "Deysi Brau, Reina y Obareanlé," storyteller Lisette Núñez, intervention by Professor and Researcher from the National Archive Bárbara Danzie León, activist and Curator Diarenis Calderon Tartabull, journalist Bienvenido Rojas, and Gladys Egües Cantero herself. Premiere of the documentary "Gladys Egües Cantero: Tribute," edited by Gretel Marín Palacio.

The event will take place on Wednesday, July 24th at 10:00 am at the Museum Casa de África. Location: Obrapía No. 157 between San Ignacio and Mercaderes, Habana Vieja.

The activity is coordinated and organized by Professor and Researcher from the National Archive Bárbara Danzie León, Colectiva Afroqueer Nosotrxs, the rap group OBSESION, in collaboration with the Afrofeminist Articulation of Cuba, Casa de África, Memory and Archives Management Group, Librería Ireti, Maestras Productions, and Gretel Marín Palacio.

Mr. Muhammad dedicated his entire life to justice movements for Civil Rights, Black Power, and building power from the bottom up. He tells about joining the movement and SNCC (the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee) at 18 years old. Sadly, Curtis Muhammad left us in 2022.

Cuba, 1961: 250,000 volunteers taught 700,000 people to read and write in one year. 100,000 of the teachers were under 18 years old. Over half were women.

MAESTRA explores this story through the personal testimonies of the young women who went out to teach literacy in rural communities across the island—and found themselves deeply transformed in the process.

"Sementes de saberes Pataxó" participará do Festival del Caribe nesta quinta-feira, 4 de julho. Convidamos você a aproveitar este maravilhoso material.

📍Cine Rialto (Rua Santo Tomás entre Heredia e San Basilio) Santiago de Cuba, Cuba.

“Sementes de saberes Pataxó” é um curta-metragem que aborda a educação indígena
pataxó, na Aldeia Kaí, terra indígena de Comexatibá, Extremo Sul da Bahia. Lideranças
e professoras falam sobre a importância da criação da Escola Estadual indígena Kijẽtxawê Zabelê na comunidade, para manutenção dos saberes, costumes e tradição
do Povo Pataxó.
A Escola, além de receber estudantes não-indígenas, também é reconhecida como
referência na prática pedagógica em diálogo com a sabedoria ancestral e o ensino da
língua indígena Patxôhã. O curta também aborda os desafios enfrentados pela comunidade na luta por valorização, reconhecimento e estrutura da educação escolar
indígena. Além disso, contextualiza as violências históricas sofridas pelo povo Pataxó
nesse território, onde se deu a primeira invasão dos Portugueses e que ainda resiste em face dos conflitos com os invasores de terras.
