2016 got off to a great start with MAESTRA screenings throughout Cuba in January and we have many upcoming screenings and events!
We’re finishing up screenings at Penn State through the Pittsburgh-Matanzas Sister Cities Partnership and we’re looking forward to all that the spring has in store. Read below to learn what our team is up to!
We still have screening requests coming in and are delighted to continue sharing this story. Thank you for sharing this road with us.

MAESTRA
Across Cuba
In November 2015, one of our key collaborators, Kimberly Waller, Educational Consultant and PhD candidate who has been researching the Cuban Literacy Campaign, organized seven screenings in Havana and Santiago de Cuba with former literacy volunteers.
In January, our Managing Producer, Alison Kibbe, took MAESTRA through Santiago, Camagüey, and Cienfuegos, screening with former literacy volunteers and young people.
We are thrilled that this story continues to be meaningful across the island.
Thank you to the Christopher Reynolds Foundation whose support made these tours possible, and for their continued support throughout the life of the MAESTRA project.

U.S. Tour
MAESTRA has been touring across the provinces of Cuba!
We are very excited to announce that from April to June, 2016 Luisa Campos Gallardo, Director of the National Literacy Museum in Havana will be touring the U.S.
April 24-29, she will present at the Adult Literacy Conference hosted by the Goodling Institute in Family Literacy at Penn State. She will then travel to New Mexico, the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest, presenting on her work with the YO SI PUEDO program, and the work of the National Literacy Museum.

March 10-12 Lily Lombera and Alison Kibbe will be presenting at Tropical Exposures: Photography, Film, and Visual Culture in a Caribbean Frame a conference hosted by the Cuban and Caribbean Studies Institute at Tulane University. Their presentation Caribbean Ancestries: Past and Future, Here and There – A Look at the Works of Gloria Rolando and El Taller Experimental ENNEGRO explores how contemporary Cuban artists trace the roots, routes, and cultural influence of Jamaican and Haitian migration through their works

If you can make it to Jackson, Mississippi don’t miss this important & meaningful event!
Panels each day, including a panel on Friday, March 31st about the work and legacy of the Child Development Group of Mississippi, which was a network of amazing community-run schools that did empowerment education and liberation literacy work. We have been collaborating with some of the veterans in recording their stories of liberation literacy work
